Preparing for the First Lesson

What to Wear:

  • long socks

  • gloves

  • long pants (snow pants are ok for starting)

  • helmet

  • sweater/jacket

  • optional: knee pads and elbow pads

Registering the Session Online:

  • read the great park ice freestyle website for the most up-to-date information

  • create an account on daysmart recreation to ensure a spot on freestyle session

  • i am happy to provide guidance for the registration process, it is difficult the first time and gets easier afterwards

Tips for Success

  • come to practice on a day other than the lesson day for at least forty five minutes

  • warm up off-ice before stepping on ice

  • stretch after our session

  • purchase your own skates

    • purchase guards and soakers, too

    • dry the skates off with a microfiber cloth

    • store the skates with the soakers on

    • warning: do not store the boot with the guards still on them (they will rust)

  • sharpen skates every 45 hours on the ice

    • ultimate skate and hockey is a pro shop that sharpens skates next to rink 1

  • bring water and tissues

  • great park ice offers group classes, which give ten free public sessions per semester, which is a reasonable cost-effective way to start learning ice skating
